Beauty Secrets of A French Gal - Winter Essentials

The following tips are a translation of my own "beauté froide" blog post originally published in French and which you can read here. The products mentioned in this post are available in France and are the ones I use personnally (this is not a sponsored post).


Here are my essentials when the weather becomes colder:

my shea butter - photo, my own.

As it is organic and very versatile, i use a lot of shea butter (and it lasts a long time too!), especially the one called "karité soft", by Melvita (see photo above). It smells faintly of orange essential oil, has shea butter in it of course, but also argan oil which nourishes the skin and is also anti-ageing). Use this shea butter mix on your dry lips, cold feet etc... and on any other very dry area of your body,  hair or face.

Tip: with a clean spatula, i also fill a small round tin box (see above) with some "karité soft", so i can carry it easily around and apply it often on lips and nails. Plese note that nails are an especially dry and delicate area you'll want to nourish frequently.


on my face i apply... well my skin is oily but still needs moisture esp in winter so i use either organic creams as follows: "soin hydratant jour de monop' bio" or "fluide hydratant jour à l'iris de weleda", which can be found woldwide (look for an Iris scented moiturizing fluid by Weleda) . its a treat! but careful not to apply too close to the eyes, it has a lot of essential oils in it which might irritate your eyes.

For my body, I use plum oil (huile de prune ou huile d'amandons de pruneau). Just a few drops will moisturize your skin and will smell wonderfully of bitter almond! You can find this oil at aroma-zone.com

All of the above will be reviewed on this blog. Some fragrances I chose because they are light and citrusy the way I like my scents. Some others are vintage, heavier perfumes that I am curious about. A few are a blind guess, they will be surprises (love surprises!). A couple of perfumes are old favorites that i can recall with fondness but would love to smell again so i can write a review on them here, accurately.

Perfume Review: Tendre Jasmin

Here's a report on my latest catch. Inexpensive and surprisingtly good!
It is "Tendre Jasmin" by Yves rocher.

I must first say that the Yves Rocher brand is viewed as cheap and low-quality in my country, France. So I was viewing it in a negative way. But the nice reviews at fragrantica.com made me curious and I wanted to try a cheap perfume that was classiified as "good".

It is a lovely scent, floral but not over the top sweet or spicey. It is citrusy ( with citrus essential oils in it) in the beginning, I smell lemon and sweet orange and mandarine in it then comes the jasmin grandiflorum scent, soft and feminine and slightly powdery/green but not astringent.

This a beautiful everyday fragrance.

 

How do you scent your home? 2013 Edition

I go for all-natural and organic solutions.

I use organic scented candles by Néroliane - the "Eclat d'agrumes" smells great.

I sometimes spray my Caudalie Fleur de Vigne  EdT in the bathroom for a fresh smell.

And i have a diffuser for my essential oils. I love the mix of lemon + rosemary + sweet orange.

French Beauty Tips for The Lazy Gal

After reading these lazy beauty tips ( I really enjoyed the writer's sense of humor), I decided to share my own 'lazy' tips with you today.

Here is my comment on the 'lazy beauty' post: 

"Oh! I love the laziness idea here! In France, it has been turned into a series of fun books, called "les Paresseuses" (paresseuse is the French for lazy), and that way you can have beauty tips, wardrobe tips, fitness tips, cooking tips etc... for the lazy gals!
I love all-in-one products. Especially if they're organic or eco-friendly.

I use a self-foaming device for producing a soft soap for my face (try Caudalie's, if has such an incredible Fleur de Vigne scent). I just press the pump, get a tangerine size of foam ready to use. I put it gently on my face without rubbing, the soap gently washes my oils off the face. I simply rinse it while under the shower in the morning. Simple!


For my nails, I'm glad Essie finally arrived in France. I use the all-in-one base. 'nuff said.

To replace the eight hour cream you don't like, why not use organic jojoba oil, great for face/hair/body? or try Melvita's "Karité soft", which is a ready-to-use blend of shea butter (karité in French) and other moisturizing oils that faintly smells of orange peel. I use it on my lips, cuticles, nails, feet and other dehydrated places that need extra-care."

Latest Purchase: Serge Lutens samples

I recently purchased 7 samples of Serge Lutens perfumes from "surrender to chance", an online shop that was recommended to me on the Fragrantica forum. I recommend this shop highly!

My parcel arrived in very good state and super fast, exactly within a week time. The shipping method I chose was US postal service first class intl.

I am already very happy with the "Fleurs de citronnier" fragrance, and i'm planning to buy soon a full bottle of it. A very nice experience, indeed!

Other fragrances included in my parcel were: De Profundis, Iris Silver Mist, Tubereuse Criminelle,  Un Lys, Mandarine Mandarin & Fleurs d'oranger. I will publish perfume reviews for each of these fragrances on this blog.

Les parfums et moi

This is a post I originally wrote in French, will translate it soon. It is about me and my relationship with smell and perfumes, an introduction of sorts.

★★ Le but ? Révéler un peu de moi à travers mes parfums, autant dire "mes amours". Une jolie idée de questionnaire signée Nessou. ★★


★1/ Etes vous un homme ou une femme ?Absolument femme de corps, mais très masculine dans mes goûts : en matière de décoration (cuir et métal, années 30), de mode (je déteste le mièvre, le beige rosé, les frous-frous...) et une certaine disposition d'esprit. Mon idéal ? Katharine Hepburn.

★2/ Quel age avez vous ?J'ai dépassé la trentaine et je viens enfin de trouver "MON" parfum ! Quel bonheur ! Je vous révèle enfin son nom : "Cologne Bigarade" par Jean-Claude Ellena, un parfum édité par Frédéric Malle.

★3/ Depuis quel age portez vous du parfum ?Enfant, je me frottais aux écorces de mandarine... L'odorat est très important pour moi.

★4/ Avez vous ce qu'on appelle une mémoire olfactive ? En gros, vous souvenez vous des odeurs et y associez vous des souvenirs ?Oui, mémoire surdéveloppée.
Un exemple ?
Un parfum d'enfance serait celui du savon Le Petit Marseillais, petit cube blanc, et l'odeur délicieuse du shampooing au Lait d'avoine. Ils évoquent tous deux, la blancheur, la douceur, l'innocence, quelque chose de laiteux... Et puis, l'odeur de la bergamote, indissociable de ma grand-mère bien-aimée. La récompense suprême lors d'un séjour chez elle était d'avoir le droit d'entrer dans le sanctuaire de sa chambre et de choisir, dans une jolie bonbonnière, une bergamote de Nancy. Encore aujourd'hui, c'est mon bonbon préféré aussi bien pour le goût que pour l'odeur.

★5/ Vous rappelez-vous de l'odeur de votre mère quand vous étiez enfant ?Elle se parfumait, se parfume rarement, et avec raison, sa peau et surtout ses cheveux sentent si bon. Une odeur sensuelle,

★6/ Certaines odeurs "terrestres" vous font elles penser à certains moment ?
Je froisse souvent une feuille d'une plante rencontrée sur mon chemin, c'est un peu machinal et aussi un peu l'envie de découvrir toujours de nouvelles odeurs dans la nature.

★7/ Actuellement combien possédez vous de parfums ?3 ou 4. Enfin, je pense. Mais il n'y en a qu'un seul qui compte ! C'est "MON" parfum top secret (enfin, secret révélé plus haut) !
J'ai offert mon Diorissimo à ma soeur - il sent très bon, mais après plusieurs flacons de suite, je commençais à m'en lasser.
Et surtout, il est trop lié à une histoire d'amour qui n'est plus. Le porter n'avait plus de sens.Sinon, j'ai Annam, Zen, Zen eau d'été et Pluie d'été - tous de Tan Giudicelli !
Malheureusement cette année le CCB qui éditait ces parfums les a évincés de son catalogue, dommage.
A part "Annam" qui est une odeur sucrée, tous les autres sont des eaux légères. Tous ont de jolis flacons, une forme "galet" très originale (voir photos).
Je précise que "Zen" est une eau très aérienne, une fragrance suffisamment discrète pour être portée au quotidien.
La version eau d'été de Zen sent très bon, c'est ma préférée à la belle saison.
La rondeur gourmande d'Annam convient parfaitement en hiver.
Pluie d'été - a un très joli nom, mais je ne l'aime pas trop ! C'est un spray que je vaporise
après avoir fait le ménage, pour que la maison sente bon. Mais le jus n'est pas assez raffiné pour être porté à même la peau.
-Eau de Rochas (Cologne acidulée), cadeau d'une amie.-J'emprunte souvent "l'eau de thé vert" de l'Occitane, un des rarissimes parfums portés par ma mère.
-Et bien sûr "MON parfum" aux "Editions de parfum Frédéric Malle" - une maison artisanale encore confidentielle.

★8/ Seriez vous capable de compter le nombre de parfums que vous avez eu et porté tout au long de votre vie ?Question difficile...
-Eau de lavande à l'anglaise, ultra-classique, de Yardley - pour les grandes occasions durant l'enfance.
- Anaïs anaïs, le premier acheté avec mes sous, à l'adolescence, mais vite abandonné, une déception.
-Un coffret "Jardins de Bagatelle" de Guerlain, vers 17 ans. Il contenait le parfum, le savon, le lait pour le corps, je l'adorais mais j'ai dû l'abandonner car la mère de mon premier amour portait le même parfum ! Et ça dérangeait mon chéri !
-Ensuite plusieurs années de Diorissimo
-Puis ma période "Thé vert" avec l'Occitane et "Zen parfum d'été" en alternance.
-Aujourd'hui, enfin, je dis merci à Frédéric Malle !

★9/ Pour conclure êtes vous fidèle ou pas ?
Oui, plutôt fidèle, sur de longues périodes, qui correspondent à des histoires d'amour, des étapes de vie....

★10/ Quel genre d'odeur aimez vous ?
Ma préférence va aux parfums frais et acidulés. J'adore les agrumes, aussi bien en parfumerie traditionnelle qu'en aromathérapie (ah ! le petit grain bigarade !) et les notes de "thé vert" (chez Bulgari, l'Occitane et "Thé pour un été" chez l'Artisan Parfumeur).

★11/ Vous tenez vous au courant des nouveautés parfums ? Si oui quel est votre favori du moment ?
Je me tenais au courant tant que je me cherchais. Mais voilà, c'est fait, j'ai trouvé mon "identité olfactive" grâce notamment au site osmoz.com. Ce site présente en effet une véritable encyclopédie des matières premières des parfumeurs, des reportages, et des fiches détaillées sur des centaines de parfums !

★12/ Si je vous demande de citer 5 parfums quels sont les 5 noms qui vous viennent directement à l'esprit ?
le 5 de Chanel
après l'ondée de guerlain
eau de Bulgari au thé vert
eau de rochas
tubéreuse criminelle de Serge Lutens / Shiseido

Pour moi, les "nez", les parfumeurs professionnels, sont plus importants qu'un parfum isolé (c'est un peu la démarche chez Frédéric Malle, chez qui j'ai assez logiquement trouvé "MON" parfum, une fragrance hors-normes et personnelle).

Je dirais donc que j'affectionne tout particulièrement les créations de :

★Serge Lutens (créateur génial en parfumerie : Iris Silver Mist, Un Lys, et la splendide Tubéreuse criminelle, mais aussi d'un univers personnel olfactif, visuel, sensuel.) Serge Lutens vient de créer un véritable "labyrinthe olfactif" à l'occasion d'Euralille 2004. S. L. est d'ailleurs originaire de Lille.

★Jean-Claude Ellena (toutes ses créations, notamment eau de Bulgari au thé vert, Un Jardin en Méditerrannée pour Hermès, maison dont il est devenu le parfumeur officiel depuis cette rentrée 2004 avec la ligne Hermessence).

★Olivia Giacobetti (Hiris chez Hermès, j'ai aimé son "Thé pour un été" chez l'Artisan Parfumeur et "En passant" chez F. Malle. Ce très jeune "nez" vient de fonder sa propre maison : "IUNX".)

★Ernest Beaux (le créateur du no 5 de Chanel)

★Tan Giudicelli (voir plus haut)

★13/ Un flacon qui vous plaît particulièrement ... même si vous n'aimez pas l'odeur...

Trois parfums des années 30, parce que j'adore tout ce qui est Art Déco :
Tous les flacons du génial verrier René Lalique sont superbe.
La mythique boule noire "Arpège" de Lanvin - que je n'ai pas encore senti !
L'Air du temps, un nom magnifique, un très beau flacon, surtout dans la version carrée modernisée. Mais je déteste ce jus.

★14/ Une pub que vous aimez.... laquelle ?

Je pense uniquement à la presse magazine... De très beaux portraits de femmes...
Acqua di Gio (en noir et blanc, le visage en gros plan du mannequin Diane Kruger)
le Max Mara, belle lumière dorée, envoûtants yeaux verts...
toutes les campagnes de Giorgio Armani incluant Milla Jovovitch, parce que j'ai un faible pour Milla
certaines campagnes de Guerlain sublimes, mystérieuses (avec le mannequin Shalom) et d'autres affreusement vulgaires.
Celle de l'L'Air du temps aussi, avec ce baiser donné par Audrey Marney, la Française à l'air de mannequin anglais (avec sa translucide peau de rousse).

★15/ Qui achète vos parfums ? Vous, votre conjoint ou qqn d'autre ?

Moi. On m'en a rarement offert, et c'est heureux, car c'est très personnel...

★16/ Aimez vous que votre conjoint porte du parfum ?

J'apprécie beaucoup oui... Une banale Cologne au thé vert de supermarché qui sent très bon sur lui.
Mais ce que je préfère, c'est le délicat arôme de noisette (si, si) qui se dégage naturellement de ses cheveux.
J'adore son odeur à lui, quoi.. Mon homme je l'ai dans la peau.

If I could design a perfume myself...

My dream perfume would have a vintage bottle by Lalique. Above is pictured a bottle of "Commedia" by Lalique. But maybe I'll go for a more classical design, such as this:

The scent would be citrusy/neroli/tuberose, a lot like "Fleurs de citronnier" by Serge Lutens. I will also add spices as base notes: ginger and black pepper and maybe cardamom if it blends well.

And the name would be "SIN" which means "China" in Hebrew. but also "sin" in english... and "without" in spanish... many double-entendres in this one...

Perfume Review: French Lime Blossom

This is my first (and maybe last) Jo Malone perfume. I'm very disappointed. When i spray this perfume i start to feel ill and begin sneezing. I believe i'm allergic to it. This is the only time this happenned to me with a perfume.

Now, about the scent itself well i expected some citrusy notes, someting invigorating, but got something too floral and too soapy instead. Again, a big disappointment.

Perfume Review: Fleurs de citronnier

Beautiful scent. I love the work of nose Christopher Sheldrake for the Serge Lutens house., especially in "Tubéreuse Criminelle".

"Fleurs de citronnier" starts with a lot of citrusy zing and faint white florals, it is innocent and lovely. Then i get a lot of old soap, soap as it used to be made. Finally the tuberose settles in, and i get a lighter "Tubéreuse Criminelle".

I was curious as to what Sheldrake would come up to in a neroli/citrus fragrance, as i love his more sensuous creations such as "tubéreuse criminelle", "un lys" and "iris silver mist". The result is a very wearable daylight citrus that is soft and feminine.

Well, my first encounter with Tubereuse Criminelle was love at fist sight. I was thinking: "this is the ONE!" It's floral and feminine and special, unlike any other floral. But i smelled it in a peculiar form, that is in a concrete (wax) sample from Shiseido.

Now i finally bought the perfume in its alcoholic form, not the wax one. And what a surprise! the scent starts with a really strange mouthwash smell of mentol and pine. I understand from other reviews that it is the styrax that dozs that. It's a very disturbing smell. Fortunately, it dissipates after a while and the beautiful floral creamy sensuous tuberose reigns supreme at last.
This is a throughly contemporary interpretation of tuberose, and won't smell like any other perfume, something that I deeply value in a scent. This is the first perfume by Christopher Drake for Serge Lutens that i came upon discovering, and i liked it so much that i wanted to know more about the Sheldrake/Lutens creations. Definitely a keeper.
